Living with Bees - Giveaway!

Last spring, Bees moved into the exterior wall of our house. I just can't bring myself to kill them. There's lots of reasons I can't get behind beeocide such as; Colony Collapse Disorder, I love honey, they are simply fascinating, we need them to pollinate our gardens both big and small, and I admire them.

Here is a great article about why I can't kill them. And here is an article about a group of scientists that are making some headway with understanding Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

Highlights of Living with Bee's
  • Some days the bee's are more active than others.
  • Hive cleaning seems to take place about once a week wherein the weaker Bees are kicked out of the hive and not allowed back in. These Bees die clinging to my door,on my door step, or just inside the door where they have crawled in an attempt to keep warm. Or something.
  • Zeke, having been traumatize as a pup when I stepped on a Yellow Jacket nest sending N., Zeke and I running for our lives, has a significant fear of all things that go buzz in the day or night (even flies - we all were stung pretty badly!). Beehive cleaning days make Zeke run really fast through the door. Sometimes he even shoots me a look of frustration just before he runs for his life through the door. Our Bees are helping him get over his fear of all things that buzz.
  • I now sweep out my entry and doorstep WAY WAY more often than I ever have.
  • Bees like it when I sing to them. And they really like drumming.
  • We still have never been stung. Our bees are very happy, healthy bees.
  • Everyone that visits can't help but comment on the bees and stare at them as they come and go.
  • I am slightly pissed about the undoubtedly FABULOUS Spearmint Honey that is somewhere in the depths of my house THAT I CAN'T GET TO!
Perhaps it is a tad bohemian, but I kind of like living with bees.

Kill or allow others to kill coyotes and other wild predators on our land. It was their land first and they're just doing what coyotes do. I'd rather teach them what they can't do on my land than let someone kill them for being themselves.

I won't move the spider that lives in my car's side mirror. He's such a warrior! He'll get out while we're on the highway and hang on for dear life - It makes me soooo nervous! When we slow down he quickly crawls back behind the mirror and I take a deep breath of relief!

I can't kill the lady bugs that hatch in our wall each spring and come inside to be warm.

I can't chase the blue jays away from my bird feeder in the front yard, even though they sometimes chase away the smaller birds. I just love their wild calls, their color, and how the Steller's Jays remind of teradactyls!

I read Nancy's comment and I had a little spider in my car that had been there for months as well! I even named him. My good luck spider Fred. Well, sad ending to that story though, my husband borrowed my car and well, Fred is nowhere to be found. :(

Rocks. I can't go past a pile of rocks, dirt, gravel or freshly dug hole without spending (sometimes hours) looking for unusual or pretty stones. I'm pretty sure I've ruined quite a few jeans pockets over the years b/c of this!

I can't bring myself to kill spiders. There was a spider that lived in our bathroom for months. The girls had grown so accustomed to it that when one day, he/she wasn't there during their bath, they got sad! (as did I!) He/she would hang by a single strand of her webbing and dangle above the bathtub. I would simply say, "Ok... please go back up to your space and get out of my space" when it was time for me to lean over to rinse the kids and he/she would! So weird!

I can't leave for work without kissing my husband. There's something about it that makes my day just start off right. If nothing in my day goes right at least I know it started off as best as it could.

I can't bring myself to deny my cat a treat. Even though she demands them every time I go into the kitchen and I hate how much power she wields over me I still give in. Not right away though, of course not, that would be too easy. I give in after the obligatory yelling match that goes on between the cat and myself (myself here being a totally rational adult) at least once per day. It begins with her meowing insistently while staring at the treat drawer and me sternly saying, "NO." This naturally progresses into a lengthy diatribe on my part (she hasn't developed strong speaking skills yet thank god) about how she is spoiled and needs to get a job of her own or at the very least learn to use the toilet and that a lack of opposable thumbs is no excuse. She simply blinks at me, cocks her head and resumes meowing at which point I sigh heavily as if she has outsmarted me yet again and give her the treat. Score another one for the cat.

I can't enjoy eating meat. It's a texture thing. I've even tried to eat Boca Burger and because the texture is just like real hamburger, I couldn't get it down. I can't explain it but I also can't deny it. I'm on the brink of becoming a vegetarian.

I can't bring myself to organize my entire house - OK that probably doesn't count :)! How about, to not worry. I would be so worried about the bees stinging my family. I wish I could have your "Bohemian" attitude :)!! The honey does sound enticing! Way to live in harmony!!

Kristi March 27, 2009 11:37 AM

Lobsters/fish
I will go fishing but only if it's catch and release, don't get me wrong, I love to eat fish but I can't listen to them flop around in the bucket dying because they can't 'breathe' out of water
And I live in Maine so this next one is like denying my born & bred heritage or something...I can NOT put the live lobsters in the boiling water, I just can't. Same as with fish though, I can eat them after they are dead & cooked but I can't do the killing or cooking haha!

Debbie Griffin March 27, 2009 12:01 PM

Ladybugs...our house is full of them, but they were such an unusual thing when I was growing up that I still catch myself saying, "Oh look! A ladybug!" even though there are a gazillion in my home in the northwoods on any given day!

Mary March 27, 2009 12:35 PM

I can't stop watching the geese and ducks in the springtime - even while I'm driving! I love waiting for the little babies to be born. It's so refreshing to watch nature and how the lifecycle continues.

raggedydayz March 27, 2009 12:41 PM

I can't kill ladybugs...so darn cute. I love em!

You know have you thought about calling your local beehiver in your area? Perhaps they can come and remove them and take them away safely?

katrynka March 27, 2009 2:23 PM

Don't enter me in the drawing, as I already have this set! But I agree with raggedydayz, it might be good to see if someone can get them out as the honey build up might not be good for the structure of the house. It is heavy stuff!!

Terri March 27, 2009 3:36 PM

I can't bring myself to use public toliets. They just gross my out. Thanks for the chance to win this set.

I could NEVER kill a deer. My husband goes bird hunting, and my brother-in-law goes deer hunting. I could just never do that. I have a problem killing anything.

Like so many others who have commented I cannot bring myself to kill spiders. Actually there are very few things I will kill. Everything has its place in the ecological system and I think we have already done too much to disturb it.

My 18-year-old son is a beekeeper. In fact, I just helped him last weekend open up his hives for spring and feed them. I got stung! Ouch! I can't bring myself to tell my kids "no" often enough, even though they are now 18 and 22.

Stephanie Washburn,  March 28, 2009 11:16 AM

I could never go hunting... my husband loves it and has even discussed bringing our son with him and I HATE IT. I am in no way a vegetarian, but the thought of my husband and son killing a living creature repulses me. On a better note, thank you so much for the chance to win this awesome set!

Hi! Love to hear about your bees! I would be wanting to get at that honey too if I were you!! :-) Something I just can't bring myself to do. . . I cannot throw away a live plant. Whether it is an inside or outside plant, if it has a chance to live, it can't be tossed. I think I made be a plant (and tree) hugger! :-)

Much as I am frightend and disgusted by spiders I will not kill them. I chase them outside or get a paper, dust pan, anything I can find to get them to crawl on so that I can place them back outside. Not sure why they terrify me so but I still can't bring myself to kill them.

Thanks for the chance to win an excellent stamp set.
